“Body contouring” is a shopping category, not a procedure. It covers everything from a $755 device session at a med spa to a $19,392 lower body lift in an accredited surgical suite, and clinics use the phrase precisely because it lets them quote whichever end of that range makes a consult go well.

The useful way to sort it is by what the procedure physically does. Energy devices either freeze or heat tissue and are sold in a series. Liposuction removes fat but leaves the skin envelope. Excisional surgery removes skin and is sold once. Those three groups have different price structures, different failure modes, and almost no overlap in who they are right for. This page compares them on price and on unit of purchase, and points to the detailed guide for each. All figures were verified in September 2026.

What Does Body Contouring Cost?

The table below mixes three national datasets. Read the “what the fee covers” column before comparing any two rows, because the American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes surgeon fees only, The Aesthetic Society publishes surgeon plus facility, and CareCredit’s study is closer to a real patient total.

OptionTypical costUnit of purchaseWhat the fee covers
Radiofrequency skin tightening$755Per treatment, usually a seriesTreatment (CareCredit)
Nonsurgical skin tightening$760Per treatmentSurgeon and facility (Aesthetic Society)
Muscle toning (CoolTone)$1,107Per treatment, usually a seriesTreatment (CareCredit)

Liposuction, upper abdomen$3,724Per areaAll-in (CareCredit)
Liposuction, national average$4,711Per procedureSurgeon fee only (ASPS)
Liposuction, lower abdomen$4,874Per areaAll-in (CareCredit)
Excision of excess skin, any area$4,838Per procedureSurgeon and facility (Aesthetic Society)
Mini tummy tuck$6,247Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)
Arm lift (brachioplasty)$6,732Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)
Liposuction, upper and lower abdomen$7,857Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)
Tummy tuck, national average$8,174Per procedureSurgeon fee only (ASPS)
Standard tummy tuck$8,205Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)
Thigh lift$8,715Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)
Lower body lift, national average$11,397Per procedureSurgeon fee only (ASPS)

Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck$13,099Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)
Lower body lift (belt lipectomy)$19,392Per procedureAll-in (CareCredit)

Two disagreements in that table are worth naming out loud. For a lower body lift, ASPS reports $11,397 and CareCredit reports $19,392. Both are correct: the first is a surgeon fee and the second is closer to a patient’s total after anesthesia and facility. For liposuction, three sources produce $2,764, $4,711 and $4,874 for overlapping definitions of the same operation. Use the highest figure for budgeting and treat anything lower as a partial quote.

Group 1: Non-Surgical Devices

These are the entry point, and the pricing trap is the unit. A $755 or $1,723 average is a per-treatment number, and almost nothing in this group is sold as a single treatment.

Allergan Aesthetics, which makes CoolSculpting, states that most patients need at least two treatment sessions typically spaced four to eight weeks apart, and that up to 20 to 25% of the treated fat in each spot is permanently eliminated per treatment. Two sessions across two areas is four purchases, not one. Our CoolSculpting cost guide breaks that down into the per-cycle math the industry actually bills in, and the Emsculpt guide covers the muscle-stimulation side of the same shelf.

For skin texture and mild laxity rather than fat, radiofrequency microneedling sits at a similar price point per session with a similar series structure. Our Morpheus8 cost guide has the per-session and full-protocol numbers.

Who this group is right for: people close to their target weight with a specific pinchable area, good skin elasticity, and no interest in downtime. Who it is wrong for: anyone with loose hanging skin. No surface device removes skin, and buying three rounds of one before accepting that is the most common way people in this category waste money.

Group 2: Liposuction and Minimally Invasive Tightening

Liposuction is the volume tool. CareCredit’s national averages run $3,724 for the upper abdomen alone, $4,874 for the lower abdomen alone and $7,857 for both, while ASPS puts the national surgeon fee at $4,711 before anesthesia and facility. Our liposuction cost guide covers per-area pricing and how multi-area bundling works, and the Sono Bello and AirSculpt guides cover the two national chains that price it differently from independent practices.

Liposuction does nothing for skin, which is why subdermal tightening devices are usually sold alongside it rather than instead of it. Our Renuvion cost guide covers the helium plasma option and, more usefully, the add-on pricing structure that makes it far cheaper bought during a liposuction than booked on its own.

Who this group is right for: fat in specific places with skin elastic enough to shrink back. Who it is wrong for: significant weight loss with a skin envelope that will not retract.

Group 3: Excisional Surgery

This is the group people arrive at after major weight loss, and it is priced by how much skin is removed and how long the operation takes. The Aesthetic Society reports a $4,838 average for excision of excess skin as a general category, which sits far below the named operations because it averages small single-area cases in with large ones.

The named procedures separate cleanly by scope. A tummy tuck averages $8,205 all-in, rising to $12,488 extended and $13,099 for a fleur-de-lis. An arm lift averages $6,732 and a thigh lift $8,715. A lower body lift, which addresses the abdomen, flanks, back and buttocks in one circumferential operation, is the top of the market at $11,397 in surgeon fees or $19,392 all-in.

Two smaller operations get bought as add-ons rather than standalone: a monsplasty for the pubic mound, which is dramatically cheaper combined with a tummy tuck than booked separately, and a panniculectomy, which is the one procedure in this entire category that insurance sometimes pays for. Our skin removal surgery cost guide is the hub for the whole post-weight-loss category and covers staging several of these across multiple surgeries.

Cash Price vs. Insurance

Assume you are paying cash. Medicare contractor policy L39506 states that liposuction used for body contouring, weight reduction or alteration of appearance is cosmetic and not covered as medically necessary, and that cosmetic surgery performed to reshape normal structures to improve appearance is not a Medicare benefit. Commercial payers write the same rule in their own language.

The exception is panniculectomy, and only under a documentation test: the pannus must hang below the level of the pubis, the record must show chronic intertrigo that recurred or stayed refractory across three months of treatment, weight must have been stable for six months, and photographs are required. Even then, the numbers are sobering. In CMS’s 2024 national claims data for CPT 15830, the code for infraumbilical panniculectomy, the average submitted charge was $4,944 in a facility setting while the average Medicare allowed amount was $994. That five-fold billed-to-allowed gap is the space a cash payer negotiates in.

If you have a hospital-based surgical bill rather than a med spa quote, our charity care checker is worth running before you pay anything, because nonprofit hospital financial assistance policies frequently reach further up the income scale than people expect.

How to Pay Less

Price the full course, not the first session. This is the single most expensive mistake in this category. A device average of $1,723 becomes $6,900 across two areas and two sessions. A surgical fee of $8,174 is one purchase. Compare totals, and run whichever total you land on through our fair price checker.

Ask which fees the quote includes, every time. The same lower body lift is $11,397 or $19,392 depending on whether anesthesia and the facility are in the number. Get surgeon, facility, anesthesia and garments broken out as four lines.

Bundle procedures into one operating room. The largest savings in surgical body contouring come from combining, because you buy one anesthesia team, one facility day and one recovery. A monsplasty added to a tummy tuck costs a fraction of what it costs as its own surgery.

Use an accredited office surgical suite instead of a hospital outpatient department. Facility fees are the least negotiable line on a hospital bill and often the largest gap between two otherwise similar quotes.

Negotiate the quote before you finance it. Practices that lead with deferred-interest medical credit cards have room to move when you offer to pay in full at booking. Our guide to negotiating medical bills has the exact language, and the negotiation script tool will generate it for your situation.

Understand what an unpaid elective balance becomes. Cosmetic balances are ordinary consumer debt and do not carry the protections attached to medical debt, so they can reach collections faster and behave differently. Read our guide to medical bills in collections before signing any financing agreement.

The Bottom Line

Budget $755 to $1,723 per treatment for non-surgical devices and multiply by the number of sessions and areas. Budget $3,700 to $7,900 for liposuction, $6,700 to $8,700 for a single-region lift, and $11,400 to $19,400 for a lower body lift, using September 2026 national data.

Then answer the only question that determines which group you belong in: does skin need to come off? If yes, every dollar spent on devices is spent twice. If no, surgery is a large purchase for a problem a much cheaper tool can reach. Get that answer from a consult before you get a quote from anyone.
