Could charity care wipe out your hospital bill?
Nonprofit hospitals are legally required (IRS section 501(r)) to offer financial assistance. Eligibility keys off your income as a percentage of the Federal Poverty Level. Check yours; nothing you enter leaves this page.
Good to know
- Charity care applies at nonprofit hospitals (about 6 in 10 U.S. hospitals). For-profit and public hospitals often have their own assistance programs too.
- You can usually apply after you get the bill, and often even after it goes to collections (240 days from the first post-discharge bill under 501(r)).
- The free nonprofit Dollar For will handle the application for you at no cost.
