  • Charity care applies at nonprofit hospitals (about 6 in 10 U.S. hospitals). For-profit and public hospitals often have their own assistance programs too.
  • You can usually apply after you get the bill, and often even after it goes to collections (240 days from the first post-discharge bill under 501(r)).
