An abdominoplasty removes loose lower-abdominal skin and fat, and in most cases tightens the abdominal wall muscles that separated during pregnancy or major weight change. It is real surgery in a real operating room, usually under general anesthesia, and it takes two to five hours depending on how much ground it covers.
That is why the price shopping is so confusing. The number most people find first is a surgeon fee, the number the practice quotes is sometimes an all-in package, and the number a third practice quotes is a surgeon fee plus a separate anesthesia estimate you have to chase down. This guide separates those layers using 2026 published pricing, covers what mini, full, and extended versions actually cost, and explains where the one operation insurers sometimes pay for fits in.
What Does a Tummy Tuck Cost Without Insurance?
Across the sources checked in August 2026, a full tummy tuck lands between $6,000 and $18,000 once everything is included, with the middle of the market at $8,000 to $12,000.
| Service/Type | Low | Average | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASPS national average surgeon fee (excludes anesthesia and facility) | n/a | $8,174 | n/a |
| Aesthetic Society average, surgeon and facility (2022 databank data) | n/a | $7,465 | n/a |
| Mini tummy tuck (below the navel only) | $4,000 | $5,000-$7,500 | $8,000 |
| Full abdominoplasty, all-in | $6,000 | $8,000-$12,000 | $18,000 |
| Extended or circumferential tummy tuck | $8,000 | n/a | $20,000+ |
| Tummy tuck combined with liposuction | $8,000 | n/a | $18,000+ |
| Surgeon fee component | $3,000 | n/a | $8,000+ |
| Anesthesia | $500 | n/a | $1,500 |
| Surgical facility / operating room | $1,000 | n/a | $3,000 |
| Pre-op labs and medical clearance | $100 | n/a | $400 |
| Compression garments | $50 | n/a | $200 |
| Post-op prescriptions | $50 | n/a | $200 |
The single most useful fact in this whole category is the first row. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes a $8,174 national average on its own tummy tuck cost page, and on that same page it states that the figure does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities, or other related expenses. The Aesthetic Society’s $7,465 average, drawn from its national databank for 2022, covers surgeon and facility but explicitly excludes anesthesia, medical tests, prescriptions, and surgical garments.
Neither of those is a price you can pay. Stack the components in the lower rows on top of a surgeon fee and you get to the real-world numbers: NuBody Concepts puts the national full tummy tuck range at $6,000 to $15,000, the Plastic Surgery Center of the South puts it at $6,000 to $15,000 with a typical band of $8,000 to $10,000 (and $8,000 to $12,000 or more in the Atlanta market specifically), and NOVA Plastic Surgery puts the 2026 all-in range at $8,000 to $18,000 in the Washington DC metro.
Sources do disagree on the ceiling, from $15,000 to $18,000 for a standard full tummy tuck and above $20,000 for extended work in an expensive market. Treat $6,000 to $18,000 as the honest cross-source range and expect coastal and major-metro quotes at the top of it.
What Drives the Price
Which operation you are actually buying
A mini tummy tuck works only below the navel, takes less operating room time, and prices at roughly $4,000 to $8,000 nationally, or $5,000 to $7,500 in a mid-cost metro. A full abdominoplasty treats the whole abdominal wall, repositions the navel, and typically doubles the operating time. An extended or circumferential version wraps around the flanks and lower back and is the version most often quoted after significant weight loss, which is where the $20,000-plus numbers come from.
Muscle repair (diastasis recti)
Most full tummy tucks include suturing the separated rectus abdominis muscles back together. Practices do not usually bill this as a separate line, but it adds surgical time, and surgical time is what facility and anesthesia fees are metered on. It is also the reason a tummy tuck is not interchangeable with a panniculectomy, which removes skin without touching the muscle wall.
Anesthesia and facility, which are two separate vendors
Anesthesia runs $500 to $1,500 and the surgical facility runs $1,000 to $3,000 on top of the surgeon fee. In many practices those are billed by an independent anesthesia group and an independent accredited surgery center, which is exactly how a quote that looked like $8,000 becomes $11,500 on the day of surgery.
Geography
The same operation prices very differently in Nashville, Atlanta, and Northern Virginia. The published 2026 ranges above cover roughly a two-times spread on identical work, driven mostly by facility overhead and local surgeon demand rather than anything clinical.
What else is on the table that day
Combining procedures spreads the fixed costs. NuBody Concepts prices a tummy tuck with liposuction at $8,000 to $18,000 or more, versus $6,000 to $15,000 for the tuck alone. Since ASPS lists a $4,711 average surgeon fee for liposuction by itself, buying the two together in one anesthesia session is usually cheaper than two separate trips.
Cash Price vs. Insurance
There is no insurance path for a cosmetic tummy tuck. Aetna’s clinical policy bulletin 0211, which covers abdominoplasty and suction lipectomy, lists abdominoplasty and lipoabdominoplasty flatly under its cosmetic heading. Most commercial plans use the same framing.
The closely related operation that plans sometimes do pay for is a panniculectomy, which excises the overhanging apron of skin without tightening muscle. Aetna considers it medically necessary only when a documented set of criteria is met: the panniculus hangs below the level of the pubis with photographs on file, it has caused chronic intertrigo that recurred or stayed refractory over three months of prescription treatment, weight has been stable for the most recent three months, and at least 12 months have passed since a bariatric weight-loss plateau. Our panniculectomy cost guide walks through what that documentation looks like and what the cash price is if the claim gets denied.
Two limits on that path are worth knowing before you build a plan around it. First, when the criteria are not met, Aetna moves panniculectomy into the cosmetic bucket too. Second, Aetna states that repair of a diastasis recti is not medically necessary, on the reasoning that it is not a true hernia. So even a patient who qualifies for covered skin removal is paying cash for the muscle tightening that makes it a tummy tuck.
The upside of a pure cash purchase is that there is no chargemaster, no network rate, and no explanation of benefits arriving six weeks later. The quote is the price, and it is negotiable in a way an in-network hospital bill is not. Cosmetic procedures are also not HSA or FSA eligible, so the money comes out of ordinary after-tax savings.
How to Pay Less
Force every quote into the same format. Ask each practice, in writing, for a total that names the surgeon fee, anesthesia, facility, labs, garments, and follow-up visits separately. A practice quoting $11,900 all-in, as NuBody Concepts does, may be cheaper than one quoting $8,500 for the surgeon alone. Run the comparable totals through our fair price checker before you put down a deposit.
Ask what the mini version would cost for your case. If your looseness is confined below the navel, the mini is a different purchase at roughly half the price. Get both numbers rather than assuming the full operation is the only option.
Bundle anything else you were already planning. Anesthesia and facility time are the fixed costs. If liposuction of the flanks was on your list anyway, adding it to a tummy tuck session is meaningfully cheaper than a second operation later. Our liposuction cost guide has the per-area figures to check the add-on quote against.
Get the panniculectomy question answered before you pay cash. If your skin overhang causes documented recurrent rashes and your weight has been stable, ask the surgeon’s billing office to run a predetermination. A denial costs you nothing and an approval can move several thousand dollars of the bill onto the plan.
Negotiate, and pay in full rather than financing. Practices that push deferred-interest medical credit cards have margin to give up when you decline and offer to pay the balance up front. The language in our guide to negotiating medical bills works the same way on an elective quote as it does on a hospital statement.
Know what an unpaid cosmetic balance turns into. A cosmetic surgery balance is ordinary consumer debt, without the protections that attach to medical debt, so it can behave very differently if it goes unpaid. Our guide to medical bills in collections explains where those lines fall, and if any part of the surgery happens at a hospital-affiliated facility, hospital price transparency rules can let you see the facility’s posted cash rate before you book.
The Bottom Line
Budget $8,000 to $12,000 for a standard full tummy tuck with muscle repair in 2026, $4,000 to $8,000 for a mini, and $8,000 to $20,000 or more for an extended or circumferential case after major weight loss. Anything below $6,000 is almost certainly a surgeon fee with the anesthesia and facility still to come.
The number that will save you the most money is not a discount, it is a definition. Make every practice quote you the same all-in total, then compare. And if hanging skin is causing documented skin breakdown rather than just bothering you cosmetically, ask about a panniculectomy first, because that is the only version of this operation a plan is ever likely to pay for.
