LA Fitness does not put a price on its marketing pages. To see a number you have to pick a specific club and step into the online join flow, which is where the tiers, the initiation fee and the annual fee finally appear. That is by design, and it is why so much of what is written about LA Fitness pricing is out of date.

We ran that flow for four named clubs in four different metros on September 4, 2026 and recorded exactly what each one displayed. The good news for anyone paying cash is that the web rates were identical across all four markets, which makes this one of the few gym chains where a national number is defensible. The bad news is that the fees people actually get burned by, the prepaid last month and the annual fee, are easy to miss on the way through.

What Does an LA Fitness Membership Cost Without Insurance?

Dues, initiation and annual fees were read from LA Fitness’s own online join flow on September 4, 2026. Freeze fees come from the company’s membership questions page. All figures are per person and exclude tax.

The four clubs we priced

We opened the join flow for Beverly Hills, Wilshire Blvd. (a Signature club) in California, Plano South on W. President George W. Bush Highway in Texas, Seattle on Aurora Avenue North in Washington, and South Loop on South Canal Street in Chicago.

Three of the four displayed the same ladder: Basic (club of enrollment) at $24.99 a month with a $99 initiation fee, Basic (club of enrollment) at $34.99 a month with no initiation fee, and Classic (nationwide access) at $44.99 a month with no initiation fee. Every option carried a $69 annual fee per person.

The Chicago South Loop club was different in one respect: it offered only the Classic $44.99 tier, with no Basic option shown at all. So the price is national but the menu is not. Check what your club actually offers before you assume the cheap tier exists there.

Single club versus nationwide access

Basic is the club of enrollment only. Classic is described on the rate page as including “access to all LA Fitness and City Sports Clubs nationwide” plus one guest per visit. The footnote is worth reading: “Access to City Sports Club Plus or any Elevate-branded club is not included unless specifically mentioned in the rates above.”

If you use one gym near home, Basic at $24.99 saves you $240 a year over Classic. If you travel or split time between two cities, the $20 a month is the whole point of the product.

What Drives the Price

The initiation fee trade

The two Basic options are the same membership at two different prices: $24.99 a month with a $99 initiation fee, or $34.99 a month with none. That $10 monthly gap means the $99 fee pays for itself in roughly ten months.

Over a full year, $24.99 with the initiation fee costs $467.88 including the annual fee, while $34.99 with no initiation fee costs $488.88. Over two years the gap widens to $240. The no-fee option only wins if you are genuinely unsure you will last a year.

The prepaid last month

LA Fitness collects first month’s dues and last month’s dues at enrollment. That is why the amount due on day one is roughly double the monthly rate before you even count initiation.

It is not a junk fee, and it does come back to you as club time. The company’s own page explains that “if you prepaid your last month’s dues at enrollment, those prepaid dues will be applied to the month following the month purchased by the final recurring dues payment,” and your membership expires at the end of that prepaid month. Just know it exists so the signup total does not surprise you.

The annual fee timing

The annual fee is $69 per person and is billed 14 days after your enrollment date, then every year thereafter. Fourteen days is unusually fast. If you join on a whim and quit in week three, you have already been billed first month, last month, initiation if any, and the annual fee.

Which brand is behind the door

Fitness International, LLC operates LA Fitness, Esporta Fitness and City Sports Club. As of September 4, 2026 the Esporta website carries a notice that “the Esporta Fitness clubs are now rebranded as LA Fitness” and redirects to lafitness.com, while the About Us text on that same page still lists Esporta Fitness as an operating brand across “over 700 locations across 27 states and Canada.” Both statements were live on the same page on the same day. If you joined an Esporta club, expect the LA Fitness sign and the LA Fitness rate card.

Club names also carry suffixes. Beverly Hills and several Seattle clubs are labeled “(Signature)” and some Canadian locations are labeled “(Premier Plus).” Those labels describe the facility, not a separate price tier in the online flow.

The web rate is not always the club rate

LA Fitness states in its own site footer that “offers presented on this site may not be available at all locations. Other offers may be available at a club.” Read that both ways. The web rate can be unavailable in club, and the club can have something better. Print or screenshot the online quote and take it with you.

Cash Price vs. Insurance

There is no insurance price for a gym membership, and the two questions people ask most have short answers.

Medicare.gov states that Medicare does not cover gym memberships or fitness programs and that you pay all costs, while noting they may be part of the extra coverage offered by Medicare Advantage plans, other Medicare health plans or Medigap. If you are on Medicare, the fitness benefit inside a Medicare Advantage plan is the realistic route to $0 dues, and it is tied to a participating club network that changes at renewal.

For pretax dollars, IRS Publication 502 says you cannot include membership dues in a gym, health club or spa as a medical expense. The narrow carve-out is a weight-loss program treating a specific disease diagnosed by a physician, such as obesity, hypertension or heart disease, and even then the dues line itself is excluded. Do not plan on running LA Fitness dues through an HSA without a letter of medical necessity and your plan administrator’s sign-off.

How to Pay Less

Pick the tier that matches how you actually train. Basic at one club is $24.99 and Classic nationwide is $44.99. The honest question is how many times a year you will use a second club. If the answer is under a dozen, Basic plus a guest pass beats paying $240 a year for access you do not touch.

Take the initiation fee if you are staying. Ten months to break even, then $10 a month forever after. Most people who are already gym regulars should take the $99 and the $24.99 rate.

Freeze rather than cancel for short gaps. LA Fitness lets month-to-month members suspend indefinitely for $10 a month, and paid-in-full members freeze for up to six months for $35. If your dues are above $10 and you are gone for a summer, freezing is cheaper than paying and cheaper than re-enrolling later.

Time your join around the annual fee. It hits 14 days after enrollment and on that anniversary every year. If you plan to leave, leave before the anniversary, not a month after it.

Ask the club to beat the web quote. The site itself says other offers may be available at a club. Bring the screenshot, ask what they can do on initiation, and be willing to walk. The same posture that works on negotiating a medical bill works here, and our fair price checker helps you sanity-check the number you are given.

Know your state’s health club law. California matters most here, since LA Fitness is California-heavy and Fitness International is headquartered there. California Civil Code section 1812.85 requires health studio contracts to carry a conspicuous notice that you may cancel “at any time prior to midnight of the fifth business day” after the agreement date, by mail or email. Section 1812.86 caps total payment under a health studio contract at $4,400 including initiation fees. Those rights apply whether or not anyone mentions them at the desk. If a lower rate is what you need entirely, our guides to free and sliding-scale options and the YMCA cover income-based programs.

How to Cancel Without an Extra Month

LA Fitness’s membership questions page lays out three routes: mail written notice to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619 (the company recommends registered or certified mail and keeping a record), cancel in person at a club, or cancel through your online account or by email where your state of enrollment allows it. Written notice by mail is still the documented default, so plan for it.

Timing is the part that costs people money. A mailed cancellation postmarked at least five business days before your next billing date should result in no further billing. Inside that window, you may be billed once more, and LA Fitness says it will refund that additional billing. If your agreement has an initial term of three months or more and you cancel inside that term, a termination fee applies.

One thing to ignore: the FTC’s “click to cancel” negative option rule, which was widely reported in 2024 as making subscription cancellation a one-click federal right. The Eighth Circuit vacated that rule in Custom Communications, Inc. v. FTC on July 8, 2025, holding that the Commission’s procedural error was fatal and concluding “we grant the petitions for review and vacate the Rule.” As of September 4, 2026 the FTC’s own 2024 announcement page and its Negative Option Rule library page were still live with no notice of the vacatur, which is exactly how bad advice spreads. Rely on your contract terms and your state statute, not on that rule.

The Bottom Line

Plan on $24.99 to $44.99 a month, $0 or $99 at the door depending on which Basic option you take, and $69 a year on top. Budget $69.98 to $148.98 on day one and $468 to $609 for a full first year.

The two decisions that matter are whether you need nationwide access and whether you will stay long enough for the initiation fee to pay off. Everything else is timing.
