Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting drug approved for narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea with residual daytime sleepiness, and shift work disorder. It went generic more than a decade ago, and the generic is now one of the cheaper prescriptions in the pharmacy.
Two things complicate the price picture. First, the brand version, Provigil, never dropped its list price, so the same molecule is sold at roughly a 200-fold spread depending on which bottle the pharmacist reaches for. Second, modafinil is a Schedule IV controlled substance, which quietly removes several of the cheapest ways to buy a drug in this country. Every figure below was pulled on September 3, 2026 from CMS data and live cash-price pages. This page is about cost and access, not about whether the drug is right for you.
What Does Modafinil Cost Without Insurance?
The acquisition column is CMS’s National Average Drug Acquisition Cost file, effective August 19, 2026, which is what retail pharmacies pay to buy the drug. It is the floor under every other number here. The cash column is the cash price range published on drugs.com for a 30-tablet fill, read September 3, 2026.
| Drug and strength | Pharmacy acquisition cost (NADAC) | Cash price, 30 tablets | Per tablet at retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modafinil 100 mg | $0.24196 per tablet ($7.26 for 30) | $15.05 to $21.84 | $0.50 to $0.73 |
| Modafinil 200 mg | $0.34830 per tablet ($10.45 for 30) | $25.85 to $25.98 | $0.86 to $0.87 |
| Provigil 100 mg (brand) | $53.15280 per tablet ($1,594.58 for 30) | $1,272.31 to $1,643.16 | $42.41 to $54.77 |
| Provigil 200 mg (brand) | $80.32600 per tablet ($2,409.78 for 30) | $1,901.52 to $2,478.72 | $63.38 to $82.62 |
| Armodafinil 50 mg | $0.30418 per tablet ($9.13 for 30) | $16.25 | $0.54 |
| Armodafinil 150 mg | $0.79542 per tablet ($23.86 for 30) | $32.01 | $1.07 |
| Armodafinil 200 mg | $0.82059 per tablet ($24.62 for 30) | $32.56 | $1.09 |
| Armodafinil 250 mg | $0.92258 per tablet ($27.68 for 30) | $45.82 | $1.53 |
| Nuvigil 250 mg (brand) | $34.76600 per tablet ($1,042.98 for 30) | $905.42 to $1,076.13 | $30.18 to $35.87 |
One vintage caveat: the Nuvigil 250 mg row above is the August 19, 2026 file, but the 150 mg and 200 mg Nuvigil rows have not been refreshed since January 2026 and November 2025 respectively, so only the 250 mg brand figure is current.
Two patterns matter. The generics are genuinely cheap: a month of 200 mg modafinil costs a pharmacy $10.45 and sells for about $26. And the brand-to-generic gap on the 200 mg tablet is 231 to 1 at acquisition cost, which is one of the widest spreads for any molecule that has been generic for more than a decade.
Note the 100 mg tablet is not half the price of the 200 mg. At NADAC the 100 mg costs $0.24 against $0.35, so two 100 mg tablets cost more than one 200 mg. Ask what your prescription is actually written for before assuming the lower strength saves money.
What Drives the Price
Brand versus generic, and nothing else. CMS’s Medicare Part D Spending by Drug file for data year 2024 shows generic modafinil at $72.91 per prescription across 366,281 claims and 74,941 beneficiaries. Brand Provigil in the same file averaged $4,588.10 per prescription across 2,880 claims. That is a 63-fold difference per fill for chemically identical treatment.
Schedule IV status. Modafinil appears on the DEA’s alphabetical controlled substances list as a Schedule IV, non-narcotic substance, sold under the brand name Provigil. Armodafinil carries a CSA schedule of 4 as well. That classification is the reason several of the cheap channels described elsewhere on this site simply do not exist here.
Which enantiomer you are prescribed. Armodafinil is the R-enantiomer of modafinil, marketed as Nuvigil. It costs slightly more per tablet at every strength in the table above, but the doses are not equivalent, so the per-tablet comparison is not the whole story. Both generics land in the same low-tens-of-dollars-per-month range.
Where you fill it. Drugs.com’s own price ranges show the same 30-tablet fill of 100 mg modafinil at $15.05 to $21.84 depending on pharmacy, roughly a 45% spread. Larger quantities help less than usual: 90 tablets of 200 mg runs $62.33, only about 20% off the per-tablet price of a 30-count fill.
Your indication. Payers and prescribers both treat modafinil as tied to a documented diagnosis of narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea with residual sleepiness, or shift work disorder. That usually means a sleep study first, and the study can cost more than a year of the drug. See sleep study cost for what that runs in cash.
Cash Price vs. Insurance
For the generic, cash almost always wins and it is not close. Twenty-six dollars for a month of 200 mg is below most commercial copays and far below any deductible, so running it through a plan mostly buys paperwork. If you are uninsured, none of that matters and $26 is simply the price.
For the brand, the calculation inverts completely. Nobody should pay $1,900 to $2,479 in cash for thirty Provigil tablets when the generic of the same molecule is $26. If a pharmacy hands you the brand, ask whether the prescription was written to allow substitution. Prescribers occasionally check “dispense as written” out of habit.
One caution that applies to any cash fill: it does not count toward your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. If you are insured, on a high-deductible plan, and expecting a big medical year anyway, running even a cheap drug through the plan can be the better long-run move.
Because acquisition cost is public for this drug, modafinil is a good one to price-check. Our fair price checker shows the range, and any quoted price far above the NADAC figures above is a pharmacy markup question rather than a drug cost question.
How to Pay Less
Compare a discount card against the cash price at two or three pharmacies. These are separate pricing systems and neither wins every time, and on a drug with a 45% spread between pharmacies the comparison is worth five minutes. Our guide to GoodRx vs. SingleCare explains how to run both checks quickly.
Do not count on a cash mail-order pharmacy here. Cost Plus Drugs, which is often the cheapest route for generics, does not list modafinil or armodafinil at any strength. It does list non-controlled generics like trazodone. Controlled-substance handling is why, and the same limitation applies at several other mail-order operations.
Refuse the brand. The Part D data above shows a 63-fold difference per prescription between Provigil and generic modafinil. If your pharmacy is dispensing brand, that is a fixable problem, not a price you have to accept.
Ask about the strength. Because a 100 mg tablet costs almost as much as a 200 mg one, some prescriptions can be written more cheaply per milligram. That is a conversation for your prescriber, but the price information belongs on the table.
Get the prescription cheaply. A $26 drug is useless without a prescriber, and an urgent-care visit can cost more than a year of tablets. Federally qualified health centers charge on a sliding scale based on income. Our guide to free clinics and sliding-scale care explains how to find one and what to bring.
If a bill has already landed, deal with the bill. Sleep-clinic and pharmacy balances are negotiable in the same way any medical debt is. See how to negotiate medical bills for the scripts.
The Telehealth Route and What It Actually Costs
Because modafinil is a controlled substance, whether a telehealth clinician can prescribe it at all is a regulatory question, not a clinical one.
On December 31, 2025 the DEA, jointly with HHS, issued a fourth temporary extension of the COVID-era telemedicine flexibilities. Under it, DEA-registered practitioners may prescribe Schedule II through V controlled medications over an audio-video telemedicine encounter without ever having conducted an in-person evaluation. The extension runs January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, and DEA said letting the flexibilities lapse without further regulation could disrupt patient care.
Practically, that means the drug is not the expensive part of a telehealth path. The visit is, and so is the sleep study most prescribers will want before writing for a wakefulness agent. Price those first: see doctor visit cost without insurance and sleep study cost.
Two more constraints worth knowing. Federal controlled-substance rules cap how many times a Schedule IV prescription can be refilled before a new one is needed, so you will be back in front of a prescriber more often than for an ordinary generic. And state law layers on top of federal law, so a service that can prescribe in one state may not in yours. If you are also comparing stimulant options, Adderall cost covers a tighter schedule with even less flexibility.
Bottom Line
Generic modafinil is cheap: about $15 to $22 for thirty 100 mg tablets and about $26 for thirty 200 mg, against a CMS-surveyed pharmacy acquisition cost of 24 to 35 cents a tablet as of August 19, 2026. Armodafinil is in the same neighborhood at $16 to $46 for thirty.
The brands are not cheap and there is no reason to buy them. Provigil is $1,272 to $2,479 for thirty tablets and Nuvigil is $905 to $1,076. The expensive parts of this prescription are the sleep study, the visit, and the controlled-substance rules that keep you coming back for a new script. Budget for those, not for the pills.
