Dutasteride is the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor prescribed to shrink an enlarged prostate, and at the 0.5 mg urology dose it is now a cheap generic. CMS puts national average pharmacy acquisition cost at $0.16060 a capsule effective August 19, 2026, which is $4.82 of actual drug for a 30-day supply. Brand-name Avodart, the same molecule, is quoted at $155.99 and up for the same 30 capsules.

That gap is not a supply story. It is what happens when a brand keeps its list price after generic entry and almost nobody moves off it. The CMS Medicare Part D spending file covering 2024 claims shows 248,899 beneficiaries on generic dutasteride at an average of $32.94 per fill, against 713 still on Avodart at $2,263.05 per fill. This guide prices generic dutasteride, brand Avodart, the dutasteride-tamsulosin combination sold as Jalyn, and finasteride at the 5 mg prostate dose, using figures read September 3, 2026.

What Does Dutasteride Cost Without Insurance?

The table below shows pharmacy acquisition cost (the floor, not a retail price), a typical published cash price, and the high end. Cost Plus Drugs publishes a “retail price at other pharmacies” benchmark on every product page, which is a useful ceiling for what an unhelped cash payer gets quoted.

Product (cash, no insurance)LowTypicalHigh
Generic dutasteride 0.5 mg, 30 capsules$4.82 (CMS NADAC acquisition cost, $0.16060 per capsule)$7.45 (Cost Plus Drugs, before its $5 shipping rate)$152.10 (Cost Plus published retail benchmark for the same 30 capsules)
Generic dutasteride 0.5 mg, 30 capsules at a retail counter$7.45 (Cost Plus Drugs)$8.12 (Drugs.com price guide low)$16.92 (Drugs.com price guide high)
Generic dutasteride 0.5 mg, 90 capsules$14.45 (CMS NADAC)$14.78 (Drugs.com price guide low)$35.16 (Drugs.com price guide high)
Brand Avodart 0.5 mg, 30 capsules$155.99 (Drugs.com price guide low)$1,613.28 (Drugs.com price guide high)$4,824.08 for 90 capsules (Drugs.com)
Dutasteride 0.5 mg plus tamsulosin 0.4 mg combination, 30 capsules$59.29 generic (CMS NADAC, $1.97629 per capsule)$187.18 generic (CMS average Medicare Part D cost per fill, 2024)$1,912.55 brand Jalyn (Drugs.com price guide)

The Cost Plus row is the one to sit with. The same 30 capsules that the site sells for $7.45 are benchmarked at $152.10 at other pharmacies, a 20x spread on an identical generic product with no clinical difference between them.

The Brands Are Not Who You Think They Are

Both brand names in this category have changed hands, which matters if you go looking for a manufacturer coupon and cannot find the company.

Drugs@FDA lists Avodart, NDA 021319, with a marketing status of Prescription and a sponsor of Waylis Therapeutics, not GSK, which originally brought the drug to market in 2001. Jalyn, NDA 022460, is likewise listed as Prescription under Waylis Therapeutics. Both were read September 3, 2026.

Neither brand shows up in CMS NADAC at all. Zero rows are returned for AVODART and for JALYN, while generic dutasteride and the generic dutasteride-tamsulosin combination both carry current August 19, 2026 rows. Drugs.com reports no manufacturer promotions for dutasteride, Avodart or Jalyn as of September 3, 2026, so there is no coupon route back down for either brand. It lists no patient assistance program for generic dutasteride or for Jalyn. Avodart has one, Rx Outreach Medications, which is a nonprofit mail-order pharmacy rather than a manufacturer program and does not require you to be uninsured.

What Drives the Price

Brand versus generic

This is the single biggest factor and it dwarfs everything else. Brand Avodart at $155.99 for 30 capsules is roughly 19 times the $8.12 that the same price guide quotes for 30 generic capsules on the same day, and the high ends are further apart still. The Medicare data tells the same story from a different angle: $2,263.05 per Avodart fill against $32.94 per generic dutasteride fill in 2024.

One pill or two

The combination capsule is the expensive convenience. A month of generic dutasteride costs pharmacies $4.82 and a month of generic tamsulosin costs $1.53 per CMS NADAC, or about $6.35 for both taken separately. The generic combination capsule costs pharmacies $59.29 for the same 30 days, roughly nine times as much for the same two drugs in one shell. Brand Jalyn at $1,912.55 for 30 capsules is in a category of its own.

Which 5-alpha reductase inhibitor

Finasteride at the 5 mg prostate dose is the cheaper of the two drugs in this class. CMS NADAC prices it at $0.06839 a tablet effective August 19, 2026, which is $2.05 for 30 days against $4.82 for dutasteride. Medicare Part D averaged $13.04 per finasteride fill in 2024 against $32.94 for dutasteride. Brand-name Proscar, still marketed, sits at $5.70733 a tablet in NADAC, about $171 for 30 days. If you are researching finasteride for hair loss rather than prostate symptoms, that is a different product at a different dose and our finasteride cost guide covers the 1 mg version.

The pharmacy, not the drug

At 16 cents a capsule in acquisition cost, almost the entire number you are quoted is each pharmacy’s own cash-price policy. The $7.45 to $152.10 spread that Cost Plus publishes on its own product page is the clearest possible evidence that shopping the counter matters more than shopping the molecule.

Quantity

Ninety-count fills cost less per capsule everywhere we checked. Drugs.com prices 30 capsules at $8.12 to $16.92 and 90 at $14.78 to $35.16, so a low-end 90-day fill costs less in total than two months at the high-end monthly rate.

Cash Price vs. Insurance

For a generic this cheap, running the claim can cost more than paying cash. A $10 or $15 generic copay is at or above the $7.45 Cost Plus price and the $8.12 Drugs.com low. If your plan has a deductible you have not met, you are paying the negotiated rate in full anyway and the cash price is simply the lower of two numbers.

Ask the pharmacist for the cash price before the claim is submitted. Pharmacists are allowed to tell you which is cheaper. Money spent on a cash or discount-card transaction usually does not count toward your deductible, but at these amounts that trade rarely matters.

The exception is brand Avodart or brand Jalyn. Those are the only products here where insurance is doing real work, and if a plan is covering one of them at a flat copay, that copay is almost certainly below the cash price. It is still worth asking whether the generic is an option, because the generic cash price will beat the brand copay on most plans.

How to Pay Less

1. Price a transparent mail-order pharmacy first. Cost Plus Drugs lists dutasteride 0.5 mg at $7.45 for 30 capsules with a $5 US shipping rate published on the product page, against the $152.10 it cites as the retail price elsewhere. Delivered, that is about $12.45 for a month, and less per month at 90 count.

2. Compare at least three counters with a free discount card. The 20x published spread on this exact drug is the whole opportunity. Our comparison of GoodRx and SingleCare covers running the same prescription through more than one card, and the fair price checker shows what a reasonable cash number looks like before you walk in.

3. Ask whether two pills beat one. The combination capsule costs pharmacies about nine times what the two separate generics cost. Whether splitting it is appropriate is a prescriber question, but the price difference makes it a question worth raising. Our tamsulosin and Flomax cost guide prices the alpha blocker half of that pair.

4. Do not count on the Walmart $4 list. The Walmart Prescription Program drug list linked from Walmart’s own $4 Prescriptions page, dated effective March 24, 2025 and read September 3, 2026, has no prostate or urology category. Dutasteride and finasteride do not appear at any tier, and the only enlarged-prostate drug on the list is doxazosin, in the $9 for 30 days and $24 for 90 days tier rather than the $4 tier.

5. Get the prescription cheaply. A $7 drug behind a $250 urology visit is a $257 problem. Federally funded health centers charge on an income-based sliding scale, and our guide to free and sliding-scale clinics explains who qualifies and how the fee tiers work.

6. If a bill already landed, it is negotiable. Pharmacy prices are paid up front, but the visit, the PSA test and any urodynamic testing are billed afterward. If those numbers look wrong, our walkthrough on negotiating medical bills covers what to ask for and how to get it in writing.

The Bottom Line

Generic dutasteride should cost about $7.45 to $17 for a 30-day supply, and less per month if you fill 90 days at a time. If a pharmacy quotes you $150 for 30 capsules, that is the retail benchmark Cost Plus Drugs publishes specifically to show what it is undercutting, and another counter in the same town will beat it.

Brand Avodart and brand Jalyn have no cost justification against their generics and no manufacturer coupons, and both are now sponsored by Waylis Therapeutics rather than the companies most people associate with them. Neither appears in the CMS acquisition-cost file at all.

If you are on combination therapy, price the two halves separately before you accept the combination capsule. For the rest of the enlarged-prostate cost picture, see our guides to tamsulosin and Flomax, the UroLift procedure, cystoscopy and PSA testing.
