Claritin is loratadine, a once-daily antihistamine that came off prescription status decades ago and now sits on the open shelf next to a dozen store-brand copies of itself. Nobody is filling this through a drug plan. You are paying cash, and the only real decision is which box you pick up.

That decision is worth more than most people expect. The identical 10 mg tablet sells for anywhere between about 3 cents and $1.39 depending on the label on the bottle and how many tablets are in it. This guide covers brand Claritin, the RediTabs and Liqui-Gels versions, Claritin-D and the pseudoephedrine rules that put it behind the counter, and where the cheapest legitimate supply is. All prices were checked September 5, 2026.

What Does Claritin Cost Without Insurance?

Price this drug per tablet, not per box. Loratadine is a once-a-day dose, so cents per tablet is also cents per day, which makes the arithmetic unusually clean.

Walmart’s loratadine listing carries the full brand ladder: Claritin is $6.97 for 5 tablets, $10.97 for 10, $19.50 for 30 (marked from $19.97), $19.40 for 45 (marked from $26.48) and $44.97 for 100. Sam’s Club sells a 115-count Claritin pack for $30.98, down from $38.98 with $8 off through September 20, which the page prices at 27 cents each.

On the generic side, Walmart’s Equate loratadine runs $3.98 for 10 tablets, $7.88 for 45, $9.57 for 60, $12.48 for 120 and $20.88 for 300, which the product page labels as 39.8, 17.5, 16.0, 10.4 and 7.0 cents per tablet. Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark 400-count bottle is $12.23, or 3 cents a tablet on the page’s own math.

That last figure is worth pausing on. CMS National Average Drug Acquisition Cost data, effective August 19, 2026, prices loratadine 10 mg at $0.05315 per tablet, which is what an average pharmacy pays a wholesaler. The Sam’s Club club-brand bottle sells to members below that number. Warehouse private label at volume is genuinely cheaper than the retail pharmacy supply chain here.

What Drives the Price

Brand versus store brand. Roughly a 9 to 1 spread at comparable counts. Sam’s Club’s own shelf has brand Claritin at 27 cents a tablet and Member’s Mark loratadine at 3 cents, side by side, same active ingredient, same strength.

Count. Inside a single brand, the small package is punished. Equate loratadine is 39.8 cents a tablet in a 10-count box and 7.0 cents in a 300-count bottle, a 5.7x difference for identical pills. Brand Claritin is $1.39 a tablet in a 5-count and 45 cents in a 100-count.

Format. Anything other than a plain swallowed tablet costs more. Walmart prices Claritin RediTabs at $21.97 for 30 (73.2 cents each), Claritin Liqui-Gels at $19.97 for 30 (66.6 cents each) and cool-mint chewables at $19.97 for 24 (83.2 cents each), against $19.50 for 30 plain tablets. Children’s grape syrup is $9.97 for 4 fluid ounces, marked down from $12.97.

The decongestant. Adding pseudoephedrine roughly triples the per-dose price and moves the product behind the counter. That is a supply-chain and regulatory cost, not a formulation upgrade, and it is the one place where the generic barely undercuts the brand.

Where you buy. Warehouse clubs win on unit price but require a paid membership, and clubs price by warehouse, so an online figure may not match the shelf at your local location. If allergy medicine is the only reason you would join, weigh the annual fee against the roughly $14 a year the club bottle saves over Walmart’s largest generic bottle.

Cash Price vs. Insurance

For plain Claritin there is effectively no insurance question. Loratadine is an over-the-counter drug and most commercial drug plans do not reimburse OTC purchases. The exceptions are narrow: some Medicare Advantage plans include an OTC allowance card, and some state Medicaid and CHIP programs cover loratadine when a prescriber writes for it.

Getting a prescription written for something that costs 3 cents a tablet at Sam’s Club is not a saving strategy on cash. A self-pay office visit runs into the low hundreds in most markets, which our doctor visit cost guide breaks down, and CMS acquisition data confirms there is no hidden discount waiting behind the counter.

Claritin-D is the one place the pharmacy counter matters, and not for price. FDA states that under the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005, sales of pseudoephedrine products are limited to behind the counter, buyers must present photo identification, the monthly quantity one person can buy is capped, and stores must keep personal information about purchasers for at least two years, with the Drug Enforcement Administration enforcing. In most states that still means no prescription is needed, only ID and a signature, but it does mean you cannot grab it off the aisle and self-check out.

Discount cards are worth checking only if you are filling a written prescription for a combination product. Card pricing on OTC and behind-the-counter items is inconsistent and named-chain quotes shift session to session, so verify at the counter. Our GoodRx vs. SingleCare comparison covers how to run both before you commit.

How to Pay Less

Buy the biggest bottle of the store brand. This is the whole game. Moving from a 30-count brand Claritin box at $19.50 to a 400-count Member’s Mark bottle at $12.23 takes your cost per day from 65 cents to 3 cents. That is about $226 a year saved for someone taking it daily.

Do not buy the 5 or 10 count. Small packages are convenience pricing. At $1.39 a tablet, a 5-count box of Claritin costs more per dose than many brand-name prescriptions.

Skip the format upgrade unless you need it. RediTabs, Liqui-Gels and chewables carry a 10 to 30 percent premium over plain tablets at Walmart, and there is no generic price break that offsets it at the same scale.

Spend pre-tax dollars. The IRS confirmed the CARES Act made over-the-counter drugs reimbursable from HSAs, health FSAs, Archer MSAs and HRAs without a prescription for amounts paid after December 31, 2019. On a $12 bottle that is a couple of dollars, but it applies to everything else in the allergy aisle too.

Watch the gap narrow on the decongestant version. Comparing like for like on Walmart’s listing, a 10-count of brand Claritin-D 24 Hour is $17.48 and the Equate equivalent is $10.87, so the generic saves about 38 percent. On plain loratadine the generic saves closer to 90 percent. If congestion is the issue only some of the time, buying plain loratadine cheaply and a separate decongestant as needed usually costs less than paying $1.09 to $1.75 a day for the combination. What is appropriate for you is a question for a pharmacist or clinician, not a price guide.

If cost is blocking care more broadly, start with the visit. A community health center can handle the appointment that produces any prescription you do need at an income-based fee. Our guide to free clinics and sliding-scale care explains how those fee schedules work, and our medical bill negotiation guide covers what to do if a visit bill lands higher than quoted.

When the Cheap Pill Is Not the Whole Answer

A 3-cent antihistamine is the floor of allergy care, not the ceiling. If symptoms persist, the tiers above it are priced very differently, and it helps to see the numbers before a clinician suggests one.

A steroid nasal spray sits at a similar price point; see Flonase cost. A different antihistamine may be cheaper or dearer depending on the molecule; see Zyrtec cost for cetirizine. A prescription tablet option is covered in our montelukast cost guide. Identifying triggers is priced in allergy testing cost without insurance, immunotherapy in our allergy shots cost guide, and the biologic tier in Xolair cost.

None of that is advice about what to take. It is the cost map, so a conversation about next steps can start from real prices rather than guesses.

The bottom line for September 2026: brand Claritin costs 27 to 65 cents a tablet at the retailers we checked, the identical store-brand loratadine costs 3 to 18 cents, and buying a 400-count bottle instead of a 30-count box is worth more than any coupon on this drug.
